VISUAL ARTS

9th & 10th Grade

Freshmen and sophomores will not yet be part of the academy, but they will be working on the content used for entrance into the academy. In 9th grade, students will choose a foundations class (Fundamentals of Art, Graphic Design 1, Photography 1 or Web Design 1) These classes will introduce students to basic terminology and skills. Students will be introduced to art history, the process of critical analysis and careers in the arts. Students will begin to learn how the world is influenced by visual art.

In 10th grade, students begin to refine basic skills into polished, professional works. In Ceramics & Sculpture 1, Drawing & Painting 1, Graphic Design 2, Photography 2 and Web Design via Digital Concentration, students will begin to learn conceptual thinking skills and produce works that are refined in skill and concept.

11th Grade

In the first year in the MVP program, Graphic Design, Photography & Web Design students will move into Digital Art Concentration. This course is designed to allow the self-directed, serious art student to explore various visual topics and media while creating a body or grouping of related work. Students will produce a minimum of 5 quality pieces per semester. The influence of basic art history, research, critical and aesthetic issues will be presented to students on a weekly basis.

Drawing &Painting 2 students will continue with the drawing and painting skills mastered in Drawing & Painting 1. Emphasis is placed on the use of imagination and on developing original compositions.
Ceramics & Sculpture students will enter into Art concentration and continue to experiment with 3-dimensional processes. Students will participate in the creation of the public sculpture.

Students in the first year of the academy will enroll in Aesthetics & the Creative Process Across the Arts, an MVP exclusive course. At the end of the year, a portfolio review will take place with the student to assess their yearly development in visual arts.

12th Grade

In their senior year, students will take Advanced Placement Studio. This course enables highly motivated students to do college-level work based on mature ideas and refined skill. This course requires a significant time commitment. The course will culminate with a student curated and hung exhibition at Union Street Art Gallery.

Students are also expected to take AP Art History. This course exposes students to art made across time and place from prehistory to the present. Students will analyze both artist intent and interpreted meaning of works of art.  Students can take the AP Art History exam for potential college credit.

Students will take the Collaborative Arts Seminar where they will be grouped with other MVP students from different concentrations to produce artifacts that highlight their skills in the specific fields and their ability to collaborate with other artists.
