MEDIA

9th & 10th Grade

Freshmen and sophomores will not yet be part of the academy, but they will be working on the content used for entrance into the academy. In 9th grade, students will take Introduction to Broadcasting and Digital Film Study to lay the groundwork for a focused study in media. In Introduction to Broadcasting, students learn how broadcasting is used as a news medium. With units in broadcast history, news writing, and basic field production, students will begin to learn how broadcast communication is used to influence the world they live in.

In Digital Film Study, students will begin to connect the history of art movements with the moving image. Students will learn basic historical information about motion pictures as they develop their own style as a filmmaker. Students will work on individual projects as they navigate the production side of the film industry.

In 10th grade, students begin to refine basic media skills into polished, professional works. Broadcast Production 2 students will produce a 30 minute radio documentary while they learn advanced news writing and reporting skills. Students work daily in the H-F radio station (WHFH) to develop programming and content. In addition, students will learn advanced graphics and editing techniques as they work in the Viking Television Studios.

11th Grade

In the first year in the MVP program, students will take Broadcasting Seminar and become a member of the Viking Broadcasting Company (VBC) where they will take part in running an HD digital television station (VTV) and the school radio station WHFH 88.5 FM.

Students in the first year of the academy will enroll in Aesthetics & the Creative Process Across the Arts, an MVP exclusive course. At the end of the year, a portfolio review will take place with the student to assess their yearly development in media production.

12th Grade

In their senior year, students will take a second year of Broadcasting Seminar, and they will become managers of the VBC, taking roles running VTV and WHFH.

The class requires after school work which includes being part of a live sports crew, filming events, and other duties. Students are expected to have a thorough understanding of broadcast regulation and operating practices.

Students will take the Collaborative Arts Seminar where they will be grouped with other MVP students from different concentrations to produce artifacts that highlight their skills in the specific fields and their ability to collaborate with other artists.
